This program has been designed for students who are interested in veterinary medicine to explore a variety of fields; wildlife, large animal, and small animal elements are covered each week. Participants administer veterinary care to animals in disadvantaged communities, gain valuable hands-on experience with African wildlife, and practice advanced veterinary skills on large animal species. All levels of experience are welcome!
Participants gain most of their wildlife experience through game capture (the tranquilization of wild animals for treatment or relocation). Tasks include monitoring vitals, injecting medication, and physically transporting the animal. Through hands-on activities and supplementary lectures, participants are exposed to the following:
Health & Safety
The large animal component was designed from the recommendations and prerequisites of AVMA accredited veterinary institutions. Participants work with livestock under the supervision of our Program Vet; tasks include oral dosing, injecting vitamins and antibiotics, pregnancy testing, disbudding and dehorning, castrating, and performing clinical exams.
Participants gain valuable hands-on experience by providing free veterinary care to animals in disadvantaged communities. Tasks include applying flea & tick prevention, drawing and injecting subcutaneous mange treatment, administering deworming tablets, and providing basic veterinary first aid.

Who can apply?
Many participants are interested in veterinary medicine but have little or no veterinary experience. These participants focus on observing procedures, working with exotic wildlife and to helping small animals in local villages.
Students intending to enroll in veterinary school use this program to gain more veterinary experience hours, work with a wider range of species, and learn new practical skills. These participants assist in various procedures and work with exotic wildlife.
Vet students/Vet techs
Participants with more veterinary experience have an advanced program. These participants can expect to assist in surgical procedures, perform clinical exams, make prognoses, and assign treatments under supervision of the Program Vet.
The program for qualified veterinarians includes only wildlife and domestic animals, except in special circumstances. These participants will provide veterinary care and treatment to underprivileged animals in local villages.
